Obtaining and maintaining a seal on corroded SMO Stainless Steel flanges installed in the fire water system.
A Danish based oil company has been using standard spiral wound gaskets with graphite filler on fire water lines. The galvanic cell produced by the constellation of using graphite together with stainless steel pipes, in seawater systems, will corrode the flange.
The oil company has been replacing the expensive SMO flanges on a regular basis. The FRG was presented to the company which carried out in-house tests as well as consulting an external accredited test firm.
All tests were positive in addition to the benefits of anti corrosion properties, the FRG provides a very rigid bolted connection and is very easy to install.
The company has implemented the gasket in it’s standards and is used as an emergency solution. The company has a full range on stock to be used whenever a situation requires.
